The large gaps in female artists' positions in the Nationalgalerie's collection - as in many other art museums - are a result of historical discrimination, systemic neglect and social structures. In recent years there have been increased efforts to close these gaps, for example through targeted purchases, research and exhibitions that focus on female artists. A great example of this was the internationally acclaimed exhibition “Battle for Visibility” in 2019 at the Alte Nationalgalerie, which consciously addressed this issue.
With a view to FREUNDE's 50th birthday in June 2027, the network of committed art friends wants to acquire three important female artist positions in the next three years. The first purchase in 2025 will be the work “Tio por siempre” by Kiki Kogelnik from 1964. The work is included in the current collection presentation “Zerreisprobe. Art between politics and society. Collection of the Nationalgalerie 1945-2000” can be seen in the Neue Nationalgalerie together with impressive works by Maria Lassnig, Ewa Partum, Yoko Ono and other artists under the heading Freeing the body.
