Zineb Sedira's “Dreams Have No Titles” played in the French pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale and is now being shown in Germany for the first time at Hamburger Bahnhof. In the interplay of film, sculpture, photography and performance, the French-Algerian artist interweaves parts of her own biography with the history of activist films in the context of France, Algeria and Italy.

Sedira (born 1963) designed the exhibition space as a film set for a live shoot that combines fiction and documentation, the personal and the collective. In “Dreams Have No Titles” the artist not only deals with an important turning point in the history of avant-garde film production in the 1960s and 1970s. It also presents a cautionary tale about the failure of an emancipatory dream that remains an unfulfilled promise for many people to this day.

on the occasion of the 59th  Venice Biennale.

Curated by Yasmina Reggad as well as Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, directors of Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Aktuell.

The exhibition is made possible by the Friends of the National Gallery and with the support of the Institut Français Paris and Germany and the French Ministry of Culture.
