Fred Sandback's Untitled (Sixty-four Three-part Pieces) was developed for the Kunstraum München and shown there from April 15 to May 31, 1975. The work was an important step in establishing Sandback's artistic vocabulary. Realized at a particular moment in Sandback's career, marked by the artist's interest in seriality, it offers 64 possible combinations for a sculpture, of which only one can be presented at a time. Each of the 64 sculptures consists of three strands of rust-brown acrylic yarn stretched across three adjacent rooms. The yarn can run in two different diagonals either at a height of 150 cm or along the floor. In 1975, Sandback visualized the 64 possible combinations of these three lines in his drawings Sixty-four Three-part Pieces for the Munich Kunstraum. In Sandback's 2023 exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof - Nationalgalerie der Aktuell, the variations were played through over the exhibition period and the drawing showing the current variation was presented on the opposite wall.
