In Mona Hatoum's work Puzzled, the gaps between the individual parts are noticeable - they point to what is missing, the non-existent whole. In many of her works, Hatoum devotes herself to motifs of loss, uprooting, and being in-between - motifs that are related to her own experience of exile. In 1975 the artist was unable to return to her homeland because of the Lebanese civil war and immigrated to Great Britain. Through the reflection in the puzzle fragments, the viewer is also confronted with questions about the holistic nature of themselves and the visible space.
