The FRIENDS have the exclusive opportunity to enjoy the exhibition “Monet and the City of Impressionism” one evening before the official opening together with Ralph Gleis, the director of the Alte Nationalgalerie, and his team throughout the museum. An evening very close to art.
Monet's 1867 series of paintings offers a fresh artistic look at the modern city. Instead of copying the works of old masters as usual in the Louvre, Monet painted the vibrant Parisian life from the balcony. In doing so, he turned away from traditional art history and devoted himself to the present of the growing metropolis.
The exhibition shows three remarkable cityscapes: “Saint Germain l'Auxerrois”, “Jardin de l'Infante” and “Quai du Louvre”. These works are now in the collection of the National Gallery, the Allen Memorial Art Museum of Oberlin College (Ohio, USA) and the Art Museum of The Hague. Thanks to a collaboration between these three institutions, these important paintings can now be presented together again.
The exhibition will be on view in the Alte Nationalgalerie from September 27, 2024 to January 26, 2025.
