The exhibition “Sascha Wiederhold” brings together for the first time in almost half a century the few surviving works of this artist who has been unfairly forgotten.
The work of Sascha Wiederhold (1904-1962) is a rediscovery. The artist has been part of Herwarth Walden's Berlin gallery “Der Sturm” since 1925. Wiederhold also designs stage sets, posters and book covers. His imagery consists of wildly swirling shapes and patterns as well as intense colors, with the large-format paintings conveying an almost psychedelic viewing experience. During National Socialism, Wiederhold stopped working and from then on worked as a bookseller.
Only a few works have survived. The painting “Archers” from 1928 has already met with great response as a new acquisition by the National Gallery in the current collection presentation “The Art of Society 1900-1945”.
The exhibition is made possible by the Friends of the National Gallery.
