The Nationalgalerie, the board of FRIENDS of the Nationalgalerie and BMW invited people to the celebratory award ceremony for the 12th Prize of the Nationalgalerie. Before and after the ceremony, guests had the opportunity to view the exhibition “National Gallery Prize 2024. Pan Daijing. Dan Lie. Hanne Lippard. James Richards” before the actual opening.

The award ceremony was led by Christian Kohorst - Chairman of FRIENDS of the Nationalgalerie, Claudia Roth - Minister of State for Culture and Media, Ilka Horstmeier - Member of the Board of Directors of BMW AG and Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath - Directors of the Hamburger Bahnhof - Nationalgalerie der Aktuell. After the award ceremony, the artists were celebrated with 300 guests in the inner courtyard of Hamburger Bahnhof.

Pan Daijing, Dan Lie, Hanne Lippard and James Richards will receive the Nationalgalerie Prize, which will be awarded to four artists for the first time in 2024. The Hamburger Bahnhof is showing the four new productions in a group exhibition, which will then enter the collection of the Nationalgalerie. James Richards shows an installation of collage, film and sculpture made from found and own images, Hanne Lippard fills the exhibition space with two sound works from her own voice, Pan Dajing leads the audience into a cinematic and musical work of art and Dan Lie creates an artistic ecosystem that which visitors can experience with different senses. The exhibition opens on Friday, June 7th with three admission-free open days.

The artistic positions of the award winners Pan Daijing, Dan Lie, Hanne Lippard and James Richards represent a section of the contemporary art scene in Germany. With the inclusion of the four new commissioned works in the Nationalgalerie collection, the Nationalgalerie Prize supports the development of artists in an important phase of their professional careers. Each has designed a space that expresses different aspects of their artistic practice. The four installations interact with the specific architecture of the exhibition rooms through sound, light, moving images or biological matter.

The exhibition is curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, directors, Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Aktuell. Assistant curator: Agnes Rameder, scientific museum assistant iF

This is the twelfth edition of the Nationalgalerie Prize, which has been awarded every two years since 2000 to young positions in contemporary art.

The exhibition is made possible by the FRIENDS of the Nationalgalerie and supported by BMW. The acquisition of the works of art is supported by Riller & Schnauck, BMW partner in Berlin.
