Hamburger Bahnhof - National Gallery of the Present

Duration June 12, 2007 - October 7, 2007

Location Hamburger Bahnhof – National Gallery of the Present

The exhibition was made possible by the Friends of the National Gallery.

In cooperation with the Museum of Modern Art New York (MoMA), the Nationalgalerie im Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Aktuell is retrospectively showing an unprecedented selection of Marden's artistic work from June 12, 2007. With 43 paintings and 11 drawings, the exhibition covers all phases of the artist's work. Both the gradual, conscious development of his work and the constant exploration of light, color and surface are presented through the selection of works.

The gradual, conscious development of the artist's work, as well as the constant exploration of light, color and surface are always shown. The works from the first twenty years are characterized by bright monochrome surfaces and illustrate the artist's first successes. In the mid-80s, Marden devoted himself to calligraphic works embedded in shimmering backgrounds before moving toward intensified colors. Both phases are equally represented in the exhibition. In addition, two current large-format paintings will also be included in the exhibition, which will be presented to the public for the first time.
