“Goya – Prophet of Modernism” is an international collaboration between the Nationalgalerie Staatlichemuseums zu Berlin, the Museo del Prado and the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. The first exhibition will be shown in the Alte Nationalgalerie on Berlin's Museum Island. It will then be on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. “Goya – Prophet of Modernity” is an outstanding premiere for Berlin and Vienna. With more than 50 of the most important paintings and a wide selection of Goya's drawings, this is the first major Goya exhibition in German-speaking countries.

The focus is on Goya in his role as the great Spanish pioneer of European modernism. Using selected major works, it will become clear to what extent Goya's key images anticipate the central themes of art in the 19th and 20th centuries. At the same time, Goya's art reveals itself as an experimental space for modern vision and artistic autonomy.
