In October 2021, Sandra Mujinga received the Nationalgalerie Prize 2021, which comes with an exhibition and an accompanying publication. The artist will be showcasing a new video installation in the Historical Hall of the Hamburger Bahnhof – National Gallery of Contemporary Art – Berlin, which is entitled “I Build My Skin With Rocks”.

The focus of the work is a fantastic hybrid creature, whose appearance is influenced by Mujinga's interest in the principle of worldbuilding in the science fiction genre and by her research into the survival strategies of animals. These strategies include both physical mutations and altered behavior to protect against the increasingly threatening presence of humans in their habitat.

To accompany the exhibition, a comprehensive publication will be published by Distance Publishing with contributions from scientists from different disciplines that shed light on Sandra Mujinga's practice in a variety of ways.

The exhibition is made possible by the Friends of the National Gallery and supported by BMW.

A special exhibition at the National Gallery of the State Museums in Berlin.
