The large, square-looking drawing 2nd Rectangle to the Floor was acquired a year after the purchase of the Berlin Block for Charlie Chaplin and - although it was created in 1977 for the exhibition rooms of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam - is an appropriate addition to the block, which was also the motif at the time was for the acquisition. In a two-dimensional form, it transfers the appearance of the terrace sculpture into the interior space, thus creating an additional specific dialogue situation. At the same time, however, with its unconditional black, it expands the meditative dimension that Richard Serra's art is able to trigger again and again with its incisive, intervening and seemingly endpoint-setting material power.
