The sound installation “Backstage,” consisting of bowls, glass plates, stones, pigments, paper bags, lamps and small speakers, is, so to speak, a snapshot of the artist’s studio. It shows a field of things and sounds that could be found in constantly changing shapes on the floor of the artist's studio in Berlin. In 2008, Rolf Julius made this situation the starting point for a work in which, on the one hand, references to older works can be found. On the other hand, the arrangement seems to provide material for future works.
Rolf Julius's works are based on a keen sense of the potential of inconspicuous objects and natural materials as well as their placement in space. The field of reference is an expanded understanding of music, which gradually emerged in the second half of the 20th century. “The smallest things, the quietest sound, what we usually overlook and ignore, were the most noble figures for him through which he made the world visible.”
Eugen Blume
